Frequently Asked Questions
about Trelona® ATBS Annual Bait Stations

What are Trelona ATBS Annual Bait Stations?

Trelona ATBS Annual Bait Stations provide active protection beginning at installation. They are an effective long-term termite baiting option designed to help termites locate the bait faster*, which starts the process of colony elimination sooner.

What makes a good termite baiting system?

The success of any termite baiting program is dependent on the ability of termites to locate the bait stations. Trelona ATBS Annual Bait Stations are designed to maximize station-to-ground contact, which helps termites locate the bait faster. Trelona bait stations have large vertical slits that make it easy for termites to enter the station, locate the food source and to feed.

Installing bait stations around the home intercepts termites during their natural foraging behavior. The two cartridges containing the bait matrix  ensures there is enough  active ingredient present to eliminate multiple termite colonies around your home.

What types of termites are controlled?

Trelona ATBS Annual Bait Stations control all economically important subterranean termite species , including the destructive Formosan subterranean termites.

Can Trelona be used for both residential and commercial buildings?

Yes, Trelona ATBS Annual Bait Stations are labeled for most types of structures that are at risk for termite damage, including residential homes, churches, office buildings, commercial businesses, warehouses, manufacturing sites, and schools.

How do termite baiting stations work to control termites?

Trelona ATBS Annual Bait Stations create a ring of protection around the home that doesn’t attract termites but intercepts them during their natural foraging behavior. Foraging termites when they discover a food source, start feeding, and travel back to the colony, leaving a pheromone trail behind.

Termites returning to the colony interact with other nest mates, sharing the bait , while other termites follow the pheromone trail back to the bait. Over time, more and more termites will have been recruited and fed upon the bait. Exposed termites will molt improperly and die which is the  beginning of the process of colony elimination.

How can I rest assured that it works?

The active ingredient in Trelona Compressed Termite Bait, Novaluron, is a chitin synthesis inhibitor. This termiticide makes an excellent non-deterrent, non-repellent food source that prevents termites from being able to successfully complete the molting process. A termite’s exoskeleton is predominantly formed by sheets of chitin. By inhibiting the termite’s ability to synthesize chitin at different stages of its growth, the termite dies after molting.

When professionally installed, inspected and replenished per label use directions, Trelona ATBS Annual Bait Stations provide ongoing structural protection through colony elimination.

How long does a bait station installation take?

A residential Trelona ATBS Annual Bait Stations installation is typically completed by a Trelona Pest Management Professional in a half day or less, offering your home termite protection that begins upon termites finding and feeding on the bait.

Are they safe for pets?

Trelona ATBS Annual Bait Stations have a Quik-Lock® cap designed to be difficult to open without a station access tool to minimize tampering by children and pets. None of the ingredients in the bait matrix are particularly attractive to pets.

Why an annual inspection?

Annual inspections are an effective means for helping homes stay free from termites for years to come. After the initial installation of the Trelona ATBS Annual Bait Stations, your Pest Management Professional will schedule a checkup within 1 year . Shorter inspection intervals may be warranted if termite activity is high .

Once it is clear that the termite problem is under control, the Pest Management Professional may continue with  at least  an annual inspection. During these annual inspections, they will document what is taking place in each station and ensure that the correct adjustments are being made and that termites do not become a major problem.

Keep in mind that there will be termites from other colonies in the area that are looking for new food sources. Trelona Annual Bait Stations will intercept those new colonies and continue protecting your home through colony elimination.

How are Trelona ATBS Annual Bait Stations installed around my home?

The pest management professional will install baiting stations around a structure, except where sufficient access to the ground is not available. The maximum interval between any two bait stations will not exceed 20 ft.

When installing a baiting station, the pest management professional will use an auger to excavate a hole in the ground approximately the same size and dimensions as those of the baiting station. If there are known, probable, or suspected termite foraging activity and other areas that provide conditions conducive to termite activity, the professionals will install stations within approximately 5 feet of those points.

Once the Pest Management Professional notices termite activity has occurred at a baiting station and bait consumption has begun, they may, depending on the rate of bait consumption in that bait station and other nearby stations, install one or more supplemental stations in the immediate vicinity of the infested bait station so that bait consumption by the termite colony can be enhanced.

Once the Trelona bait stations are installed, they work year-round protecting your home.

What about large areas like driveways and patios or under a roof’s dripline?

If the distance between two points of accessible ground around the structure exceeds 30 feet, like a wider driveway , the Pest Management Professional can place a bait station on each side of the driveway and they may elect to install one or more stations into the ground under the inaccessible surface by coring.  Alternatively, a Pest Management Professional may use a liquid termiticide like Termidor® HE Termiticide or Termidor® SC Termiticide/Insecticide to treat the are and avoid coring.

How long does it take to eliminate termites from my home?

Termite control with baits can be achieved in as little as  a few months. Trelona ATBS Annual Bait Stations professionally installed and applied according to label directions will begin to affect a termite colony after they start feeding on the bait. Colony elimination times will vary based upon time of year and amount of bait incorporated into the colony. Colony elimination times post bait feeding during warmer months can be observed within 60-90 days. During colder seasons, termites metabolism slows and elimination times are longer (90 – 180 days).

How much does an installation cost?

The cost of a Trelona ATBS Annual Bait Station installation varies and largely depends on your particular situation, the treatment plan, and service package you and your pest management professional agree upon.

How long will a bait station last?

Trelona ATBS Annual Bait Stations are engineered with durable plastic to ensure long-lasting efficacy and not rot or fall apart over time.

With annual inspections from your pest management professional to ensure Trelona ATBS Annual Bait Stations efficacy, you can rest assured you have the very best ongoing protection from termite infestation available for your home.
